Amish

Concentrated in Big Valley, but spread throughout the area, the local Amish population is made up of five distinct groups of old order. Their buggy colors help to indicate which sect they are a part of. You will see white-tops, black-tops and yellow-top buggies. The yellow-topped buggies are used by the Byler Amish and they are only found in Big Valley.

The second largest plain community in the state, these hard-working people choose to forgo many of today’s modern conveniences in favor of a simpler life, largely devoid of modern technology. To learn more about their history and way of life, visit the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center in Belleville, open on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
